Alton Busted Mugshots
An Alton arrest can stay in the city jail. It can also move to Madison County custody, or enter a state or federal system. The receiving facility matters as much as who made the arrest. Remember that the APD police record, the APD Jail record, and the county Inmate Inquiry are three separate sources. A hit in one proves nothing about the others.
Alton sits third on the Madison County city map. The 2020 Census counted 25,676 residents, and the Bureau's 2025 estimate is 25,013 per QuickFacts. The official Alton Police Department page names Chief Jarrett Ford. It lists headquarters at 1700 East Broadway and gives a weekday public contact route. The companion APD Jail page describes a facility holding city, state, and federal inmates. Federal prisoners stay there under U.S. Marshals contract guidelines.
The jail handled real volume. The 2025 APD Annual Report shows 2,189 bookings at the APD Jail. It also held 63 federal detainees. Those figures cover the municipal facility alone, not every booking across Madison County. For the outcome of a case, the court file is the place to look.
Where Alton Busted Mugshots Appear
Alton publishes no public arrest log and no searchable booking-photo feed through city channels. The official sources each answer a different question. APD points to its police and jail records. Madison County's Inmate Inquiry applies when the county accepts a person into custody. IDOC and federal locators track separate systems entirely. News reports and copied listings rank as secondary, and they may reflect an older custody status.
| Channel | Photo or record? | Status and access |
|---|---|---|
| Alton Police Department | No public individual arrest feed or photo search located. | Official city police source for department information and the APD records route. |
| Alton Police Jail | Municipal jail record; no public photo feed located. | Official APD facility source. It says city, state, and federal inmates may be held there. |
| Madison County Jail Inmate Inquiry | Photo may appear with a county booking result. | Official county portal. It applies when Madison County Jail accepts the person. |
| In Custody view | Current county result, when available. | Shows the county portal's custody field at query time. It is not an APD Jail roster. |
| APD Records Division | Police, crash, arrest, request, and statistics records. | Official records custodian route for specified APD records. |
| APD police FOIA | Records may be requested, subject to law. | Official request route through the police FOIA officer. |
| Madison County Circuit Clerk | Case and disposition records, not a booking photo. | Official court route for what happened after the arrest. |
| IDOC, BOP, and ICE | Separate state, federal, or immigration custody records. | Use only when the custody authority and record type fit the question. |
| RiverBender, The Telegraph, and EdGlenToday | Some event stories include images. | Secondary news coverage. Stories are dated and may report charges or earlier custody. |
| Mugshots Zone | Copied agency-tagged listings may include photos. | Unofficial and potentially stale. It is not APD, APD Jail, or county custody evidence. |
Why start with official custodians? Because a third-party page can keep an old copy alive long after a release or transfer, while an official roster only shows the one facility it represents. The two can disagree. Often they are simply describing different moments in time.
Alton Busted Lookup: Two Jail Checks
Don't assume an Alton booking belongs on the county roster. Run two jail checks instead. Start at the municipal facility. Then move to county custody if that fits. The Madison County countywide roster and records treatment spells out the county search fields in detail.
- Ask about APD Jail first. Use the Alton Police Department's jail and records route when the arrest is described as an Alton municipal matter. The main APD line is 618-463-3505, with weekday public hours listed by the department.
- Search Madison County Inmate Inquiry. Use a name, booking number, subject number, or booking-date range. Select In Custody when the question is who is held at Madison County Jail now.
- Confirm the receiving facility. Ask APD or county jail staff whether the person was accepted at APD Jail, Madison County Jail, or transferred elsewhere. The county roster cannot answer for a separate municipal facility.
- Use the state or federal path when custody changed. Check IDOC for a state sentence. Use BOP, USMS information, or ICE when a federal or immigration record is the relevant authority.
- Check the court file. Use the Madison County Circuit Clerk search to follow the case and disposition. A booking field is not a conviction.
A county roster result can display Photo, Name, Subject Number, In Custody, Scheduled Release Date, Race, Gender, Date of Birth, Height, Weight, and Multiple Bookings. Those fields describe the county portal only. They say nothing about whether an Alton person sat in APD Jail. The portal sets no fixed photo-retention period either.
If neither jail shows the event, request the record. A release, a transfer, an alternate spelling, or a different custodian can all explain an empty search. Ask the agency directly where the booking record and photograph are kept.
Alton Police Records and FOIA
The APD Records Division handles police reports, crash reports, arrest reports, requests, statistics, and the related fees. It also retains those files. A separate APD police FOIA page names Lieutenant Mike O'Neill as the FOIA officer. Frame your request around one incident or booking event. Ask plainly whether APD, APD Jail, or Madison County holds the photograph.

Use the Public Records Center for a county booking request.
Alton's general FOIA information gives the city roughly five business days to respond. An extension notice can arrive inside that window. The police form is short. It asks who you are, the date, your organization, what you need, and the statutory purpose behind the request. One precise ask beats a blanket demand for every recent booking photo.
- Name the person, incident date, report number, and arresting agency when known.
- Ask for the APD arrest report and, separately, any booking record or photograph maintained for that event.
- Ask APD to identify the receiving facility if the person was booked outside APD Jail.
- Use the county Public Records Center if the county sheriff or jail holds the requested item.
These channels deliver records, not live custody confirmation. When a photo arrives, label it with the agency, the record date, and the custody context. A denial or a pointer to another office should be kept in writing, and the request redirected accordingly.
Note: APD Records can hold a police arrest file while APD Jail or Madison County holds the separate booking record.
Alton Jail Booking Numbers, Not a Public Feed
Alton's best custody numbers come from a facility report, not a named online roster. The 2025 APD Annual Report lists 2,189 people booked at the APD Jail, 63 federal detainees, and capacity for 53. Those figures describe the municipal jail alone. Don't add them to Madison County Jail totals without matching the time period and definitions.
The APD Jail page, modified in 2023, describes 27 adult cells, two juvenile cells, four holding cells, and the same 53-person cap. It also notes inspections by IDOC and the U.S. Marshals Service, with federal prisoners held under a USMS contract. Since that page predates the 2025 annual report, treat the layout details as a reported facility description and weigh them against the newer figures.
| Alton figure or detail | Source and meaning |
|---|---|
| 2,189 APD Jail bookings | 2025 annual-report count for the municipal jail, not a countywide arrest total. |
| 63 federal detainees | 2025 annual-report figure for federal detainees associated with APD Jail activity. |
| 53-person capacity | Reported in the 2025 annual report and the APD Jail description. |
| 27 adult, 2 juvenile, 4 holding cells | Facility details on the APD Jail page, modified in 2023. |
A tally of bookings answers exactly one question: how many people passed through. It names no one. It says nothing about where a person went next or how a case turned out. Anyone who needs a named Alton record should skip the count entirely and go straight to APD Records, the jail that held the person, and the court file.
Alton Custody Routes After Arrest
Alton's separate municipal jail creates a two-check problem before state and federal routes are considered. An APD arrest may remain in APD Jail. It may move to Madison County Jail. A sentence can lead to IDOC. A federal detainee may remain under a USMS arrangement or move through a federal facility. An immigration matter has a separate ICE locator and does not become a county booking simply because the initial arrest occurred in Alton.
| Custody state | Confirm with | Record boundary |
|---|---|---|
| APD municipal jail | Alton Police Department or APD Jail | Local municipal custody. It is not the Madison County roster. |
| Madison County Jail | County Inmate Inquiry, jail line, or county records | County custody when Madison County accepts the person. |
| Released or transferred | Records request to APD, APD Jail, county, or receiving agency | Absence from a current roster does not erase the booking event. |
| Illinois state custody | IDOC individual search | Sentenced state custody, not a city booking feed. |
| Federal custody | BOP locator or the responsible federal authority | Federal record and custody rules differ from local jail records. |
| Immigration detention | ICE Online Detainee Locator | Separate immigration custody question. |
The official Madison County Sheriff app and social channels can carry public-safety news, crime reports, or tips, but their listings do not document a county roster or booking-photo feature. Use the official iOS app listing only for its public-safety communication role, not as an APD Jail search.
Alton Busted News Coverage
RiverBender, The Telegraph, and EdGlenToday cover Alton police, court, jail, and federal operations. EdGlenToday’s Alton weapons-charges example shows how a local story can report police allegations and a custody reference without becoming an official roster. RiverBender covers event-driven Alton arrests and the wider county. The Telegraph provides recurring newspaper and court coverage.
For the broader local source trail, use the county's Arrest News page. News photos may be booking images, police-provided images, or ordinary news photographs. The article date and caption matter. A report can be accurate at publication while no longer describing present custody.
Mugshots Zone has a county-local page with Alton Police Department tags. It is an unofficial copy source, not APD Jail or Madison County evidence. Its listing date, archive, charge text, and image status can differ from the official record. Use it only as a lead to the proper agency, then verify with APD, the jail, and the court.
Alton Arrest Records After Booking
The legal sequence continues after booking. A person may receive a court date, bond decision, release, transfer, dismissal, supervision order, or sentence. A disposition is the court's recorded outcome. It is distinct from a booking charge, an annual jail count, and a custody field. The safest record trail matches the event date and agency at every step.
Follow the Madison County Circuit Clerk court search for the case outcome. If the court record shows a change, dismissal, or other disposition, the agency and any publisher holding a copy should be contacted through their documented correction process. An official record request is the appropriate way to ask about a missing or changed item.
| Question | Best source | What it cannot answer alone |
|---|---|---|
| Where is the person held now? | APD Jail or Madison County Inmate Inquiry, then the responsible state or federal authority | A news story or annual report does not confirm current custody. |
| What did APD record? | APD Records Division and police FOIA | A police report does not establish a conviction. |
| What happened in court? | Madison County Circuit Clerk | A court docket does not replace the jail booking record. |
| Does an old online copy match? | Official agency and court records first | Mugshots Zone and other secondary pages may be incomplete or stale. |
Alton's municipal jail and its published federal-detainee figures make the custody split unusually important. The record is more reliable when the agency, facility, date, and court result stay attached to the same event.
